Comments After spending a week enjoying Bali, we took the scheduled chartered flight to Wakatobi. As always, the staff took very good care of us on the way, including a nice respite in the domestic airport lounge. The flight was a little late, but we were kept well informed. On arrival, everyone was transferred first by SUV, then boat to the resort. It had been 6 or 7 years since we'd been there, but much was the same. We land a lovely beachfront cottage between the lodge and the dining room - a very short walk to either. The dive operation is at the lodge. The camera room is well organized, and wasn't too full while we were there. Our dive guide for most of our stay was Yono. He has been at Wakatobi for years, and is outstanding. He does very good dive briefings, and is a great critter spotter. We remembered many of the dives, and had some ideas of what we wanted to see again. If anything the fish populations were healthier than last time! On our checkout dive along the house reef we saw a couple of sharks, a sea snake and a white leaf fish. We always say we will do more dives on it because it is so good, but didn't accomplish that this trip.

The dive groups are small, though you can also hire a private guide. We never had over 5 in our group, and we like to meet other divers!

Most of the fish are reef fish, though there are dives with large schools of barracuda, trevallies, etc. We saw more sharks this trip than last time. Fish populations are healthy and the coral is fantastic.

After the first day the dining room staff call you by name. We really enjoy talking with the, both about the local culture, and for those who are not local, about their homes elsewhere in Indonesia. The food is served buffet style and is very good - high quality and creative. We were there over Christmas and New Years, and both were well celebrated! When we arrived back in our room on Christmas Eve there was a plate of lovely sweets for us. The gingerbread houses were spectacular!

I highly recommend the resort and village tours.

UW Photo Comments The camera pro is very helpful! On our last trip, a dive guide saved the day by doing an emergency repair on my housing. Many of the dive guides are experienced photographers, and will point out places to get great wide angle shots!
