Comments Tipped off by an Undercurrent staffer, my first visit to Wakatobi was in 1998. I had just come off ten years of bringing dive groups to Sipadan Island (Borneo, Malaysia) and was appalled at how quickly Sipadan's pristine reefs had been degraded by poor planning, overuse, and human-created Nitrogen runoff. So my first queries to Lorenz Mader, Wakatobi's founder, were what he planned to do differently. Quite tellingly, Lorenz replied, "Perhaps I can build another dive resort, but I can never rebuild a coral reef." So from the beginning, Wakatobi's developer had reef preservation at the forefront of his plans.

The resort's beginnings were quite simple. Before the airstrip getting there was a challenge and an adventure. Yet I had repeat guests join me on those treks because the diving was so good. The addition of Wakatobi's own airstrip in 2001 change the game markedly, making for much easier access and enhanced supply lines. With strong funding at hand, Wakatobi Resort facilities continued to grow, progress, and improve over the ensuing years.

On this, my 16th visit, Wakatobi was operating better than ever. I and my group of 30 divers enjoyed very comfortable lodging, superb dining, an excellent dive operation, great dive boats, and an overall high level of service. I am fortunate to have experienced many of our planet's best diving, dive resorts, and live aboards. But in 40+ years of ardent dive travel, I have yet to find a finer or more comfortable warm water dive experience than Wakatobi currently has to offer. But don't take my word for it...visit and see for yourself.
