One way to understand dive accidents and deaths is
through descriptive case studies, but compared to Europe
and Australia, few cases get published in the U.S. They're
important, especially since in the last decade, diving doctors
have come to recognize SIPE as a hidden cause of diving
and snorkeling deaths. Once brushed off as drowning,
Swimmers' (or Scuba divers') Immersion Pulmonary
Edema is responsible for more "mysterious" drowning
deaths than was thought.
A diver's first symptom is feeling unable to breathe,
which he typically attributes to a failing regulator that isn't
delivering air. The solution? Get the diver out of the water
immediately, because his own body fluids, rather than
returning via his blood to his bladder, are flooding his lungs....
