Comments If Truk Lagoon is the ultimate site for Ww2 wreck diving Sangat would be a fairly close second. 6 major Japanese wrecks are scattered over a 2-3 mile area, unlike Truk they are not deep & tech diving was not required. On only 1 wreck (the Irako) did the dive operator insist on Nitrox (28%) due to its depth (35 metre-105 feet). I dived all the major wrecks except the Marozan Maru, which a dive guide told me was his favourite. All wrecks were penetration dives with Olympia the easiest due to larger interior spaces and access points, Irako the most challenging due to depth, transits through small hatchways, and silt levels on the floors. Kyogo Maru was my personal favourite, due to excellent visibility, ease of penetration and profusion of fish life and invertebrate life on the uppermost part (it lies on its port side). I would describe my second dive on Kyogo as exceptional. Reef diving was also high quality, I particularly loved Malpadon Reef due to its warm thermal vent and the incredibly lush, healthy hard corals - a beautiful dive. Only negative was absence of big fish on the reef dives - due to local fishing pressures. Larger fish such as jacks were on most of the wrecks though. I found the manager of dive operations ( an English guy - Tom) very congenial, he went to great lengths to meet guests’ requests for specific dive sites, & did a pretty good job of juggling schedules to ensure guests did not double up on specific sites. Dive staff & boatmen were uniformly helpful & professional. I would specifically mention Jazz for his attention to detail & skill in locating the Kyogo wreck after it lost a mooring line. Accommodation was in the way of individual cabins raised stilts, fairly basic but superb location in front of white sand beach & gorgeous house reef. Overall I highly rated both diving & resort - all of my 10 dives were excellent or exceptional. Both my partner & I wish we had stayed longer.
