Comments This was my third time on Rocio, and she is really showing her age. The boat's layout has always been problematic, the dive deck far too small and the dining area awkward (wedged into the bow on the bottom deck), but this trip, I really noticed the crumbling trim, the awkwardly proportioned steps, the cramped conditions of the cabin, the stained rugs and furniture. I have heard that Mexico Liveaboards is launching a new vessel, and I hope their new boat will be more spacious and its finishes neater.
The diving was less spectacular than on previous trips, with very low vis on most dives, often cold water, and plenty of current. That's nature for you. The diving in the northern sea of Cortes can be chilly so bring a hooded vest and gloves. Make sure your skills with your SMB are decent; my buddy needed to ascend early, and it helped that I am practiced shooting the bag from depth.
My buddy and I opted for solo cabins, as I already knew the cabins were cramped; FYI, the company asks you pay double rather than the more typical 65 or 75% single supplement.
The racks holding wetsuits could use a lot more hangers. Many divers tied their soft stuff off on railings since there were too few hangers. Hoping that will be addressed--an easy fix.
I admire the ethos of the boat's lovely crew, who work hard to make your trip great. It's a real strength of this company. I left a computer in a rinse tank at the end of the trip, and the crew inadvertently threw it overboard as they emptied the rinse bin. They owned up to it right away, and though I am sorry to lose a computer, I appreciated their candor. I also had two weird falls, one on a patch of wet deck, and the other while on the little boat that takes you to the Bahia de los Angeles for whale shark snorkeling. Badly bruised ribs and shoulder. So watch your step!
Would I take another trip on Rocio? Not I, though I would certainly consider their new vessel if she's bigger and more spacious.
