Comments This was my first time diving at Socorro so my best point of comparison was Cocos. The diving was great; but not exactly what I suspected, with a lot of time spent waiting for pelagics to appear on some dives. But the waits were worth it, as we were joined by one or more oceanic mantas on most dives, schooling hammerheads on several dives and even a couple of tiger shark sightings.

I booked my trip through Manta Trust and the presence of a couple of their researchers on board was a big plus. They made presentations on their research on several evenings and were more than eager to discuss and/or answer questions about manta ecology and behaviour at any time.

I was impressed by how efficiently the Nautilus dive team managed what was quite a large group (30 divers). The dive masters were among the best I’ve encountered on a Liveaboard.

The Belle Amie has definitely seen better days, but is more than serviceable. I don’t know how it compares with the other Liveaboards that ply the Sea of Cortez, but definitely not of the standard of top Liveaboards I’ve been on in the Coral Sea and Indian Ocean.

But I’d still highly recommend due to the quality of the crew and the standard of service.
