Comments Cabo Pulmo, a marine park on the eastern shore of Baja California MX is a fantastic destination if you like schooling fish. Its famous for its schools of Amberjacks, Grunts and Bull sharks. Based on my experience, you just will not see the density of fish that is routine at Calbo Pulmo, anywhere else in the Caribbean.
I spent four days there in mid-November 2023 and had great diving everyday. I was on a commercial trip from Los Angeles conducted by Ocean Safari Scuba, who utilized Cabo Pulmo Beach Resort (CPBR) as the local outfitter. For most travel divers, I wouldn’t use anyone else in the nearby village as CPBR provides the complete experience; dive services, lodging, and food service. I was housed in a clean, well equipped efficiency unit that was a short walk from the resort. The restaurant onsite has excellent local fare with very personable, attentive service. All the staff spoke English fluently or well enough that it was easy to communicate. There were zero health issues related to the food service or bottled drinking water.
We dove two sites each morning, and that is the local method. Panga’s are launched from the beach and there is quite a bit of climbing up and over the side of the panga when its on the launch trailer or upon returning to the beach, so divers should be comfortable with uneven footing and being able to steady oneself holding on to the boats rigging. Dive entry is via back roll and doffing of the BC to reenter the panga.
Diving in the marine park is tightly controlled, so each morning the dive guide visits the Park HQ and to obtain permission to visit what sites are available. My impression is this allocation of sites my not be completely blind to local politics between all the outfitters and the Park staff. Over the four days we were able to hit all the good sites with the exception of the Shipwreck, which I had dove in 2021, so I feel like I got my share.
The terrain is rock substrate reefs with hard corals, sea fans and sponges. There is evidence of bleaching everywhere, which is to be expected given the water was 82F on all the sites. But divers don’t go to Cabo Pulmo for the reefs, they go for the schooling fish. During my 2021 visit to the Shipwreck I swam in schools of Yellow Grunts so thick I could not see out. This year we encountered the Amberjacks and tried our best not to disrupt them as they paraded past. Visibility ranged from 60’-100+’ depending on the site. At Offshore Reef we could see the bottom at 90’ when pulled up.
Cabo Pulmo has been a marine protected area since 1995 and is the poster child for how a protected area can create a self sustaining economic engine for the local economy. As such, its becoming more popular, and pressures on the Park are increasing. The road to the village, once mostly gravel is now paved to withing six miles of the village. Once that final section is paved even more visitors will come so if you’re interested in seeing the Park before that happens, visit sooner than later!

UW Photo Comments There is plenty of subjects for the UWP, mostly wide angle, it's not a macro place. Plan to protect you rig with a soft cooler case as the pangas are not camera friendly.
