Comments We booked the two-part package of Lembeh Strait and Bunaken. First was Lembeh. We were met with sign, smiles and good van in Manado and were driven to the dock north of Bitung right across the strait from the resort. Small, "rustic-nice" resort totally focused on diving. Not fancy but great value with clean, comfortable individual cottages with good beds, table for computer w wifi, fans, private bathroom, 5 gallon drinking water dispenser in each cottage. Nice deck provides good gear-drying spaces. Two boats were in use. Just 4 divers on ours. Boat crews knowledgeable, skilled, careful with gear; local guides attentive, working hard to make each dive special (succeeding). Delicious, plentiful Indonesian food buffets served by friendly, competent staff. Accommodate vegetarian requests. Other staff very helpful. As “senior divers” now, we appreciated the care provided by guides and boat crews to help us with gear getting into and out of the water. Sidebar: We use thin Aeroskin California "wetsuits" that are not "mm" calibrated but are thin, easy to pack and perfect for these warm Coral Triangle waters.

Shocker: Lots more trash, resorts, boats, divers on this first return trip in 2018 since 1996. Still, more marked dive sites and well-seasoned experienced local guides (like Rein!) make Lembeh still number one for muck diving. Flamboyant cuttlefish, mimic octopi, hairy frogfish, mandarin fish, wonderpus octopus , ghost pipefish....

Note: Recommend washing out wet suits frequently, showering and using ear drops after each dive. Sad to say, Lembeh is now quite polluted. Divers who want the world’s best muck diving should be prepared to protect themselves and take extra care with gear and with their own bodies.

Finally: We heard from other divers on our arrival flight that European “managers” had recently “left” this resort (as if this were a negative); yet we found the ALL Indonesian team did a fine job and kept things running well all week. By contrast, we had unhappy issues with this operator in Bunaken where there were European “managers” and Indonesian “staff.”

Enforced diving restrictions We were paired with another couple and we all were experienced and good with air; the dive masters had no problem with 70+ minute dives especially since most Lembeh diving is fairly shallow. Bottom line: The guides really listened to what we preferred.

I was asked about mosquitos...Yes, they are alive and well especially in the mangroves of Bunaken. We made sure to keep our un-screened windows at both Two Fish locations tightly closed all the time; from dusk-night-dawn, we made sure the porch/deck light was off when we went in or out. This avoided the problem...after we learned our lesson the first night!
