Comments [None]Our dives in Komodo National Park in June 2024
My friend and I booked a ‘big birthday’ dive trip to Vanuatu. About three weeks before we were due to leave, the local airline went bust. We were faced with cancelling everything or trying to toggle together another trip at short notice. I had a friend who had visited the Komodo area before who recommended a place to stay. I googled a lot of dive operators. I booked flights from where I live in Australia to Bali, spent a quick night there then hopped over to Labuan Bajo.
Labuan Bajo is a fishing town located at the western end of the large island of Flores in the East Nusa Tenggara province of Indonesia. It is in Komodo district. It is the hopping off point to see Komodo dragons, but also a regional centre for dive operators, live aboard and day trips. We decided to stay in Labuan Bajo and do daily dives.
The place is a small tourist town with mainly dive shops, a few markets and a few hotels. A minaret dominates the visual and audible skyline. The port is busy and in parts, pretty. But not consistently. There is very much a trade and commerce atmosphere with diesel fumes and rusty containers around the corner.
We walked the main street and decided to go with Sea Creatures diving, which offered day trips and enriched air nitrox. There was plenty of choice though.
Sea Creatures is associated with a restaurant/bar called Copper Bonnet (logo- a mark V old diving helmet). They offer coffee and breakfast, lunch and evening beers etc. The divers meet there in the morning. There is a short walk to the ‘dive boat port’. I bought my own gear (thin wettie/computer/fins/mask/regs) but you can rent your own.
The boats were basic but comfortable, we had about 8 divers on most trips with 2 dive guides. Most dive sites are within an hour of the port. They have refreshments and the scenery is stunning.
The diving was magnificent. Breathtaking. We had so many encounters with turtles, a few sharks, amazing coral and big pelagics.
A day of snorkelling was just as enjoyable, though the day trip including a Komodo dragon tour plus snorkelling ( with another company) was terribly overcrowded and felt unsafe and unsanitary.
I am not a marine biologist so the many species we dived remained nameless. I was overwhelmed at some points by the diversity. The deeper corals(+10 metres) were brilliant, especially the ones sitting in the many currents.
I was challenged by the currents but felt absolutely thrilled to have completed several drift dives where we flew across the coral.
In summary, my friend and I are planning to go back next year!!
