Comments When travelling this far, it's advisable to take a few days to acclimate to the time change before diving, so we stayed in Jakarta at the FM7 hotel near the Jakarta airport for two nights before continuing to Sorong. At the Water's Edge in MA is the dive shop that provided the trip. While in Jakarta, we toured to see the city and area. Many in our group had been on the Pindito before, so we were used to the operation and they knew us as well. The boat has been improved, with the upper lounge now extended over the dive deck, giving shade and much more relaxing space.

We started our journey out of Sorong to Misool and then along the southern coast of Western Papua. We dove for 6 days, getting in 24 dives. The variety of fish life and critters in this part of the world is overwhelming. And the soft corals are a delight to see, so many colors. Visibility was generally quite good, although we did have a few dives where it was limited due to a plankton bloom. The last three dive days we were in Triton Bay for 9 dives. I had expected clear water and all sorts of colorful soft coral, but there was a plankton bloom that limited visibility most dives. Still, the soft corals were exquisite and colorful. The 6 nights dives we did, including 2 blackwater, produced fish and critters that hid during the day. Our trip ended with a dream dive - we had a message from a fishing boat that it had three whale sharks around it, so we headed there and wound up doing a 2-hour shallow dive with those three whale sharks staying with the boat and us, allowing for plenty of interaction and photos. During that dive we also were visited by several dolphins. It's an awesome experience being so close to a fish that big (the biggest was about 8m long) that wasn't interested in us but was aware of our presence. They are beautiful animals.

We started our journey back from Kaimana, and overnighted at the FM7 in Jakarta again before heading back to the US. Most of us used Qatar Airlines for air travel, which meant long layovers in Doha. However, QA offers several grades of lounges where one can reserve space to pass the time. This allows opportunity for food, sleep and a shower at a reasonable cost.
