Comments It was my 9th trip to Indonesia and the 5th journey to Raja Ampat, but only the first that disappointed me. For me and probably for hundreds of other divers, Raja Ampat was the last frontier of pristine dive destinations. Unfortunately, two things have changed recently. One is the global ocean warming that caused coral bleaching that reached Raja Ampat too. The other is that nowadays not hundreds but thousands of divers visit Raja Ampat every year. I have read that about 170 liveaboards operate in that region besides many land-based operations. We had an unfortunate start to our journey. There was no casualty, but everybody lost everything. Sadly, the boat was not insured. The owner of the boat (Grand Komodo) offered a land-based substitute at the Raja Ampat Dive Lodge (RADL) on Mansuar Island, which is the main island in the Dampier Strait. To save our air tickets, we accepted the offer. Based on our previous experience, we planned plenty time for the travel. It played out well, because my dive buddy’s flight from Budapest to Istanbul was delayed four times due to bad weather, therefore he missed the connection ... Subscribe to get the full story.
