Comments Komodo Dive trip.
When our close dive travel friends said, “What do you think about Indonesia?” my wife and I barely hesitated to agree to the trip.
Turns out, it is a very long way from the Midwest.
Forty plus hours of travel later, we touched down in Denpasar, Bali, Indonesia. (DPS)
Our luggage was not quite as lucky to make our quick connections and found their way to the hotel the next day.
**Note, pack a few necessities in your carryon.
After a couple days on Bali, we then flew to the Komodo International Airport in Labuan Bajo. (LBJ)
We were met at the airport by a few crewmembers of the “Blue Manta”; they arranged taxis to the marina where the dive tenders (small ribs) were waiting to bring us to the ship.
They showed us to our room, which was larger than any other Liveaboard I have stayed in previously. Very large bedroom and bathroom, with large windows overlooking the busy port. Independent cooling units for each unit allowed for individualized comfort.
We set up our dive gear on the dive deck and got a tour of the accommodations.
The cruise director gave us an informal safety briefing; no official safety drills were performed.
Escape hatches and routes were pointed out, along with a couple of fire extinguishers.
All the diving was from the tenders, which had nice ladders for climbing back into the boat.
The diving varied from no current to ripping current, all with healthy reef and fish life.
My first time using a reef hook took a couple of tries to get it to catch, but became easier with usage.
They allowed only four dives a day; the last one being a night dive and all dives needed a guide. Maximum time of one hour is typical. I was happy to have a guide on some of the sites, as the current could catch the unwary by surprise.
Overall, I am looking forward to returning to this area. The diving makes the travel worthwhile.
