Comments This trip is put together last minute (under 3 months instead of a year ago) as the group trip we had hoped to join was full. Our LDS (website [oceansafariscuba.com link]) arranged the dive trip and domestic flights in Indonesia for us, a diving couple. The reward for long plane rides, even what felt like longer transit wait times, is a new location as part of the itinerary, Triton Bay, although it's the 3rd trip to Raja Ampat for us. The encounter with baby whalesharks is posted on the Ocean Safari website above (titled "Diving Triton Bay") and will not be repeated here. It was fun!

Kaimana seems to be a nice little town, very scenic, and we had a refreshing walk down the street from our hotel, the Grand Kaimana. The hotel, though, is a pass. If anyone has to stay there, please don't walk on the grounds around the hotel building or you may get stuck in the swamp.

Dive sites closer to Kaimana suffered from low visibility. On the other hand, I have never enjoyed muck and night diving as much as I did on this trip. The visibility improved as we got closer to the Gam islands, and Raja Ampat delivered with warm water, easy diving, jewel-toned corals. What's not to like?!

As our third trip on the Arenui, this tops all previous trips in terms of crew support. Tirelessly they pampered and coddled everyone pre-and post-dive, adding to the friendly vibe among all passengers. The crew deserved 5 stars, but the one negative star comes from the attitude of the Cruise Director and spouse. However, they are soon to be replaced by another couple, and as this couple joined us for their training, we had the pleasure to know them as helpful, and most importantly, warm and friendly.

Were the food as good as the presentation, and not lacking in fresh salads and fruit, I would have given the quality of food 5 instead of 3 stars.

The master suite where we stayed has beautiful windows, its best feature. The bathroom after renovation is also very roomy. Overall, Arenui is a very comfortable dive boat. And you pay for it.

UW Photo Comments The two small "stations"and shelves in the dining/lounge area for photo equipment is substandard for a dive boat of this calibre. Instead of fighting for the inadequate space, I routinely brought my camera equipment back to my room for maintenance. No charging in the room unattended, of course.
