Comments On the cruise immediately before ours, the ship Adelaar incurred hull damage necessitating drydock repairs. Five days before the scheduled departure, each of the six passengers received an email informing us of the situation and stating that they had obtained the best replacement boat available if the passengers still wished to go forward with the trip. This created a no win situation, as all passengers (save for one Malaysian) had already arrived in Indonesia. The company handled it decently well, but the trip was not what we had signed up and paid a premium for.

From the literature that was given to us with the initial notice, it was evident that the Magia 2 was not a dedicated diveboat; rather, it is marketed as a yacht that provides some diving. The lack of nitrox fills onboard was a major impediment and resulted in mismatched diving groups, as half the divers had it and half didn't--basically we had ranks of tanks prefilled with 32%, but could not fit/obtain enough for everyone. The yacht's crew also came with the boat and, although they tried very hard and were nice, they were not used to dive operations. Other inconveniences included the deck layout and crowded preparation area. Finally, the ceilings of the cabins in the replacement boat leaked...

(Transport by air to/from Komodo, rather than the planned [dis]embarkation in Bali was smoothly handled for us all.)

The Adelaar representative/cruise_director who was the company's sole employee onboard for the trip was very good (thanks, Lorine!), and served as the dive guide for one of the groups. We ended up doing a full slate of diving, although on some days, we only had one small zodiac and had the groups drop 10 minutes or so apart. (A larger, second chase boat was obtained for the heavy current dives later in the trip.)

The diving in Komodo N.P. was more demanding than that in Raja Ampat. Currents were present on almost every dive, and up and down currents were not unusual. Several of the dives had strong currents that were not anticipated when we entered the water. All in all, a somewhat sobering experience for our self-opinion of our diving abilities.

The wildlife was abundant and amazing, as were the soft and hard corals. Many sharks, and although we didn't see Mantas, we saw other devil rays/Mobulas.

Although this particular trip was disappointing due to the last minute boat downgrade, we likely would dive with Adelaar in the future when the ship is repaired, as they seemed to make every effort to have this trip come off as close as possible to that which was planned.

UW Photo Comments Again, this replacement boat was not truly a dive boat. The camera rinse tank was a dedicated plastic storage box. The crew and the cruise director worked really hard to make it as good as possible, but the crew never internalized how important a clean camera water tank was...
