My reviews are honest. Most places are awesome even if they lack something or something goes wrong. Had someone mix my monkey lala poorly once, I called it out. A bad tank of air, again, called it out. Those were rare anomalies in places where everything else was excellent or better.

We travel to dive, for fun, for us. We have a shop, we teach, we get paid to dive with students. We've gotten paid to dive wrecks. They weren't wrecks anymore afterwards. So, ya, we know what we're doing down there. We don't dive caves.
Paying to dive means it's our dive.

In all the years of dive travel, there has only been one place I would never return to. Now there are two.
I am not trying to be nasty. This is what I experienced. I edited out all the nasty mean personal stuff. I'm not even angry anymore.

At DEMA 25, we ran into Lewis, selling hats for $500. They came with a week at "Bananarama." West Bay, Roatan. (That's $500 + 19% tax)
Room, breakfast and ten dives.
Arranged airport pickup and extra dives by email well ahead of time.
United from Las Vegas at 0100 to Houston then to Roatan landing about noon.
We arrived in Roatan.

Arrival ok. Cab driver waiting for us.
We paid cab driver $35. We saw that he kicked back $5 to someone at the resort. Hmm. Note to self: skip the arrangement next time to save the driver the kickback.

Reception folks were very friendly.

Checkin was ok, usual things. Wristband.

Room was large, mattress good.
Nothing top shelf. Its a large cheap room.
Clean. Safe was locked. Barely attached to wall. Asked to get it open twice. Never got done.

Checked our gear in at the dive shop. Most places I've been, this the last you'll handle it until departure. Not here.
Dive operation is interesting. They still fill cylinders submerged in a tank. Was greeted by Simon. Standard forms. Forgot to remind him that we had arranged for 5 additional dives. Didn't think I needed to. (Wrong)
They never even mentioned the Marine Park fee. Didn't try to sell us a BC tag. Kind of trashy screwing over the outfit that helps keep your business alive. But, hey, they might have got that ten dollars at their bar instead.

They gave us coupons for welcome drinks at bar.
Bartender was very "mechanical" in his demeanor. No greeting, no smile, just a reference to my coupon. Might as well have slapped me. A smile for this very weary traveler would have been rewarded all week. I'm extremely conscious of my own triggers. Took instant dislike for the bar. The guy serving my welcome drink didn't seem at all welcoming. I don't need a monkey lala, and if I do, well, there are plenty of bars on this beach. I do fine without liquor. I'm here to dive, not drink. He probably saved me $150 after tips..

Left our seats at the bar and sat at a table. Had chicken fingers.
Very good. Excellent fries. Seasoned nicely.
Honey mustard was very good. I'd have this again.
Waiter, Carlos, was the friendliest person we've met.
We'll eat here again due to his friendliness.

One issue with the bar/dining area is that any breeze will blow sand onto the table, where your food is.

Took 3 hour nap after lunch..
Sheets and towels are very clean and stiff. Its like home, we don't used fabric softener either. Nice. Really. No smell from laundry additives.
Electrical outlets seem to be wo ... Subscribe to get the full story. For Subscribers Only  Active subscribers continue reading here
