Comments The reefs on St. Croix that we visited were 80-90% dead. It’s really sad, because the reefs here were surely magnificent in their day. (They haven’t completely crumbled away, so you can see what they once must have been.) Some areas still have a little life, but not many. There is still a decent fish population but I wonder how long this can last. Sharks and turtles were common.

The pier dive is definitely worth doing. We saw octopus, peacock founder, turtles, eagle rays, and a large school of tarpon.

The dive operation was really friendly and professional, and super helpful. We enjoyed working with them.

I'm not surprised. About thirty years ago we were on a cruise and we dived there. The surprising thing was that even the dive guide was not interested in preserving the area. When asked about all of the people fishing right on the reef his answer was that it was more important for them to eat than to have fish for people to see. So, with that attitude who was going to try to protect the reef?
