Comments 3 days, 6 dives with my recently certified son. It was his second trip since certification, so we weren't looking for anything too challenging. First day we did West Wall and Stingraysted, and although the topography of the wall was nice, and the stingrays were as advertised, I was wondering where the fish were. Well, days 2 and 3 more than made up for it. No sharks or big pelagics, but lots of nice reef fish,an eagle ray, a few turtles, varied soft coral and on our last dive a huge green moray in a sand patch on the reef looking like Jabba the Hut.

Dive Experience, in Christiansted, was a nice outfit, with good friendly divemasters (mostly Craig) who were good an pointing out critters, and were patient with my son's equalizing problems. The boat was comfortable enough for the 4 to 10 divers, but no head. Fills were 3000 psi with tanks that had 4 lbs of wt. built in, so carry less lead on your belt. Water, oranges and sucking candy provided. Pickup from hotel was provided but no return trip, so we followed owner Michelle Pugh on the first day and drove ourselves thereafter. Night diving was available but I passed.

Colony Cove Beach resort is basically a condo complex. All units are 2 bedroom apartments with full kitchen, so good for families who don't want to spend a fortune on breakfast. We had roaches the first day but they were promptly dispatched by the exterminator. Small pool and unappealing beach.

St.Croix is generally funky and more laid-back than other high octane islands like Aruba, with smaller hotels. Restaurants were generally excellent and reasonably priced (at least to this NY/NJ area resident).
