Comments We rented a car and went to the Arawak Bay Inn. The hotel is OK but located on a steep hill away from any beach access. They serve breakfast. For other meals you must drive miles away.

Diving was off a small boat moored in Salt River. It had a head and a shade. You got aboard and soon after, you hopped in at a nearly sheer drop-off or cruised farther along to a coral reef. Sharks cruise by hoping that a guide will spear a lionfish for them. Visibility was good, no bad currents. There are lots of corals at 30 feet or less but almost none are staghorn coral, now experimentally being transplanted.

The Cane Bay Dive Shop has its headquarters in Fredericksted and has rental gear on hand. We made a night dive on the town pier—not to be missed! Color everywhere—sponges, seahorses, schooling fishes, etc. Bring your macro set up and go crazy. Getting in was easy—just jump in. The surf came up so getting out required climbing over wet rocks in diving gear. Our helpful guides got us out in one piece. We also dived a purposely sunk barge and wreckage from an old pier. Not very biodiverse but nearby was a huge field of garden eels.

Although St. Croix has a long and colorful history, today there isn’t all that much to see on land. Over-use of the land for growing sugar cane left the place mostly dry and bereft of forest. Broken-down old mills dot the landscape. A huge industrial dock area lies idle but there are plans to re-use it. There are beachfront restaurants serving lobster and fish, lots of tropical drinks. If you like booze, there is a vodka distillery with tasting. The two towns have some old Danish architecture. The botanic garden can show you some native plants. Wildlife includes iguanas and introduced deer. Ladies, if you would like an interesting souvenir, the local artisans create silver (or silver-plated) bracelets holding semiprecious stones or beach glass and closing with a unique hook system.

UW Photo Comments Boat too small for camera table. Be careful handling your camera--the boat can bump. Great shark opportunity but these are smaller sharks, maybe 5 feet at most. Black corals on the walls. Pier at night full of colorful "critters".
