Comments Our local dive shop booked the accomodations and operator, we selected flights. No trouble getting there; getting back from St.Croix to Miami and then Miami to Houston was delayed. Scary flight to Houston—could see sheet lightning and bolts from plane! But not much turbulense. American economy seating is really tight-watch out if you are a large person.
Accomodations were at the Arawak Inn—described as a “bed and breakfast”. Breakfast wasn’t bad—toast with jam, pancakes, scrambled eggs or omelet, coffee and juice. But no store or eating place anywhere near the Inn, so somebody needed to rent a car. No elevator, had to heave gear up 3 flights of stairs to my room, door didn’t completey seal, never figured out how to use the TV, internet access “iffy”. Maps don’t show you the steep hills or the narrow cliff-side roads. No beach access from our hotel. Various places to eat, service usually good .They produce their own rum and vodka; food ranges from “Little Caesar’s” and “Kentucky Fried” to really good local seafood. Great ice cream at Café de la Creme!

There are nice snorkeling and beach diving sites but we went off the dive boat “Ibis”. Good divemasters, rental gear in good shape. Diving off Salt River drops off FAST—great thickets of black corals patrolled by reef sharks.Sharks have learned to gulp lionfish off spears. A transplanted patch of staghorn coral is doing well but no living elkhorn corals at all. Some huge barrel sponges and lots of sea plumes and sea fans. Black bar soldierfish and black durgbon are extremely common; lots of feisty damselfish. Shallow reefs coated with brown fan algae. Night diver at Frederiksted pier well worth it! Seahorses, morays, sea biscuits, teardrop and arrow crabs, sea urchins, cardinalfish, and many more—bring your close-up lens. Artificial reefs of old pier debris, old barge and tugboat near north of Frederiksted—good for distant shots but not a lot of life on all that rusting metal. Big bed of garden eels near the tugboat.

Non-divers have to arrange transportation if the hotel is not near one of the two towns. Didn’t see any public transportation. The Botanical Garden is very interesting for history as well as useful or exotic plants. Distilleries may be closed or have short hours—check before going. Fine old Danish buildings, forts with cannons at the two towns but huge industrial area dominates the vew on the south side. Much scrubby growth, not much forest because island was almost denuded for sugar cane plantations.

UW Photo Comments Better visibility on drop-offs. "Small stuff" either was on the pier or back in holes in the shallows. Sharks came close, green turtles were shy.
