Comments The island of Lifou is known for the occasional night time influx of nautilus which spend the day in deep water, but come up to shallower depths at night. I dove with Lagoon Safari in Eacho, doing two daylight dives from their twin 200 hp covered boat off the northwest coast of the island. They use short fat tanks some of which have both DIN and Yoke connections. Both the divemaster and boat captain were professional, the divemaster giving a good description of what to expect; the captain spoke both French and English. Both dives had beautiful and extensive areas of large, red, fan coral and steeply gullied topography, the second dive also included some fairly long swim-throughs (bring a light to scan the walls). At shallower depths there were many species and colors of hard corals in good health. Apart from large schools of the usual small reef fish, there were white tip and grey reef sharks, one tuna, several different species of nudibrachs, and a few gigantic anemonies, over 2 m2 in area, with a dozen clownfish in each. The next day my partner and I went snorkeling at a marine park near the dive centre, accessible from the road to the Chapelle de Lourdes. Among the best snorkeling we have had anywhere, very good coral health and a wide variety of fish.

We stayed at Le Servigny, a pleasant small hotel near the airport. It has a few separate bungalows as well as a few double bed rooms; the latter just adequate for space, but there is a patio in front of each room where you can dry out your dive gear. It has a large swimming pool and dining area (fare) where you can prepare your own meals, which we did. You can pick up what you need at the largest grocery store on the island (Corail) which is 10 min away in the town of We. For breakfast we had the buffet served in the dining room, it was extensive and very good. You need a car to get around the island, we rented a car from AutoPro who have a small booth outside the airport and were fine to deal with.
