Comments This was a good 2-tank morning dive on Loggerhead boat to the low reef off Boynton Beach, Florida. This reef is more of a ledge, 50-65 feet deep. We saw angelfish, ballyhoo, box fish, butterflyfish, a green moray eel, a few graysby groupers, grunts, hogfish, jacks, parrotfish, snappers, surgeonfish, and Atlantic bigeye. No turtles, sharks, or Goliath groupers.
Loggerhead is one of 2 Splashdown boats. They are big enough for 16 divers, but that would be pretty crowded. The website sign-up calendar will indicate how many spaces are available.
We load up at the Boynton Beach Harbor Marina, motor to the Atlantic through the Lake Worth Channel, and arrive at the Captain’s selected dive site. Divers stand up, and the Captain puts us “on the numbers” for giant stride entry. Most of these Atlantic dives are drift dives, moved by the Gulf Stream, so divers need to descend as quickly as they can.
The dive master will carry a flag, and currents are usually slow enough that you can look under ledges for loggerhead turtles.
We dived Delray Catacombs and Kroenen dive sites. At both sites, we descended to the ledge and followed it, either on top of the ledge or below it, looking into the crevices and the sand.
Loggerhead will take spearfishers and lobster hunters in season. The Captain will put the hunters into the water far enough from the non-hunters to preclude encounters.
I did 2 REEF fish surveys, and practiced identifying the hard corals.
I do recommend diving the Florida Atlantic Coast. The Gulf Stream comes closest to Florida here north of Miami, and brings fish with it.
