Comments I signed up on Coral Restoration Foundation’s website to do a day of coral restoration with this outfitter. We attended a 2-hour presentation and training at CRF in the morning, then boarded Silent World’s Phoenix boat for the afternoon dives. First dive was in CRF’s Tavernier nursery, where buddy teams each cleaned algae and fire coral off the coral trees. Second dive was at CRF’s out-planting site on Carysfort Reef.
This was NOT a good coral restoration day. We divers were not well-managed, so time was wasted, and both dives were way too short, about 30 minutes. We did not plant any corals at all, only visited the site. There was some problem with the boat, so it took much longer than planned to get to and from the nursery and Carysfort.
Coral restoration is a noble activity, and I am impressed that it is even possible. The plantings that we saw at Carysfort looked well-established and growing, and the damselfishes and butterflyfishes were beginning to occupy the staghorn thickets. I will do coral restoration again, but April 16 with Silent World was not a good day.

UW Photo Comments There are no UWP accommodations on this day boat, but the coral trees and the out-planted acropora cervicornis are intriguingly photogenic.
