Comments Holiday Inn is excellent location to stay if you are diving and/or eating in the Key Largo, Florida area. Rooms are of suitable size and well maintained( excellent maid service). Nice Tiki Bar on premise and Pub Food was very good. Very near by is Sharky's( excellent fish upstairs), Coconuts and across the street, Mrs. Mac's Kitchen( local hangout with reasonably priced, good food and excellent Key Lime Pie).
Quiescence Diving Services( MM 103.5) has three boats and limits each to only six divers. Usually one goes to the Spiegel Grove and the other two go to the locations requested by those aboard. Boat dock is behind shop and very convenient parking in back. Captains Steve and Mike were very accommodating and stressed safety. Showers are on the dock and bathroom at dive shop. Dive site briefings were excellent( both drawing of reef and photo of wrecks) , but a dive guide is not put in the water unless requested and paid for. Boat has fresh water hose and spray nozzle for rinsing camera and face when you get out of the water. Boat ladder is easy to use and assistance provided.
I am not spending time describing the reefs, since the dive books on the market do an excellent job of that. Fish are very plentiful, but the shallow reefs still show damage( sand ) from previous storms and hurricanes. Spiegel Grove is awesome, but beware of currents. Benwood is excellent shallow water, wreck dive. Visibility is dependent on season and weather. At the worst it is 25 feet and at the best around 125 feet. After Labor Day is the slow season.
