Comments Key West.
Key West, Florida. 3/7-3/27 2025.
I think the reef is recovering some from the super-heated waters of the past few years (at least it seemed to be in March). Saw many healthy sea fans, and at least a few perfect smaller brain coral. A lot of fish, some sharks, rays, eels, goliath groupers and turtles. Did not see a scorpion fish or octopus. There were some days when the seas were rough or the visibility poor from some rough weather or when the wind would change directions. Some days of strong current. But also days of good visibility, fifty on the reef, 70 on the wreck.
Dove with two shops, Lost Reef Adventures, 22 dives/Southpoint, 5/would also have gone a few days with Captains Corner, but they were booked up with rescue divers. All three have rinse tanks on shore, camera buckets and fresh water hoses and iced drinking water on board/giant stride entry. At all three, as a general rule you set up on a tank yourself and do your own switching over. DMs help with boarding. On the reef, if you've dove recently, they don't require guides. Usually schedule 2-2 tank trips per day/usually 2 wreck or reef dives in the morning/2 reef in the afternoon.
Both shops had roll call between dives, a hang tank at the safety stop/ran a tag line for taking off your fins. SP has a camera table. SP's shop and parking is a ways from their boat, maybe 200-300', though depends on where you park. Got a definite NO from SP's DM about a cart ride for my gear from the boat. Lost Reef always moves your gear from the shop-to-the-boat-and-back on their cart, though it's fine if you want to carry it yourself. Both boats have a working head on board, a spot to keep stuff dry, and a large cooler with ice. ... Subscribe to get the full story. For Subscribers Only  Active subscribers continue reading here
