Comments This was CoralPalooza 2023 day, which is Coral Restoration Foundation’s annual event to raise awareness of the condition of the Keys reef and to involve divers in restoration efforts. We watched the orientation online, then boarded Lost Reef’s Dream Cat boat for 3 dives. The first dive was planned to be in CRF’s Key West nursery, but the visibility was so bad that the CRF staff just dipped in to retrieve crates of acropora palmata coral fragments for out-planting. Then we moved to Eastern Dry Rocks dive site to plant the fragments. There were about 10 coral planters on the boat. The visibility was terrible at Eastern Dry Rocks too - less than 20 feet - but we were able to plant a few dozen fragments. We saw some big midnight and rainbow parrotfish, but we were busy planting, so likely missed some other fish. Then there was happy hour at a bar in Key West, where CRF staff reported on how many coral fragments were planted that day - more than 1800! There were about 200 Keys diver participants supported by a half-dozen Keys scuba charters. CRF also reported that there was a CoralPalooza event on the Great Barrier Reef that same day, which we all think is awesome.
We highly recommend this CoralPalooza weekend to any divers who want to do something good for the Ocean.
