Comments We live in Florida now and decided to spend a weekend diving in Boynton Beach. We were told they had pretty corals. We booked our dives through Force - E dive shop and they were very helpful. They asked if we needed an instructor and I said no. They also asked if we were OK pulling a dive flag and I said yes, we were OK pulling a flag. We found out why she asked when we got on the “Splashdown” boat.

Boynton Beach is drift diving. The boat captain puts the boat on the reef and then they get groups of 2 - 4 divers in the water with a flag. The boat moves on and continues dropping groups of divers off in various spots until all the divers are in the water.

Because we use air, they paired us with one other air diver. He volunteered to carry the flag. Unfortunately he didn’t listen to the dive briefing, so our 1st dive was nothing but sand. We were told later that we should have come up and the captain would have re-positioned our group. Now we know! Our flag carrier got sea sick while off gassing so our 2nd dive was just the 2 of us. Much better! We were in a forest of Barrel Sponges, and gogornians. The water was a bit murky but I think that was due to Hurricane Ernesto that had just gone by the East Coast of Florida. The water temp was warm, 87 -89 degrees. The ocean was choppy buy doable.

We spent the night at the Sun Deck Beach House. It was perfect. The Beach House is clean and well decorated, with a kitchenette. Coffee was provided as well as water in the refrigerator. They have a pool with a nice pool deck. In addition, it’s a short walk to the ocean and the beach, and a 4 minute drive to the boat dock.

The second day we were on the “Loggerhead” boat. Because we were using air they didn’t want us doing the deeper dive on a shipwreck and to look for Goliath Grouper. We are OK with deep dives, spending a majority of our past dives with an average of 100’ but rules are rules. So the 2nd day was just the two of us on the reef pulling the flag. There were other divers on the boat who were dropped to other locations. Most of them were Lobster hunting. Our dives the 2nd day were more barrel sponges, blue azure sponges etc. But I was most excited to see big schools of fish, along with triggerfish, grey and queen angelfish.

UW Photo Comments Our first boat had fresh water for cameras, but our 2nd boat did not. There is a hose on the dock for rinsing, but they didn’t tell us that. We found it by accident. The water was murky so I didn’t spend a lot of time hoping to get good pictures.
