Comments Phil Foster Park at Blue Heron Bridge is Florida’s famous shore dive. We arrived about 2 hours before high tide, because sometimes the parking lot gets full. We geared up, walked into the water, and finned west to the bridge piers. We saw a school of small Atlantic spadefish, a batfish, a sea robin, a spotted scorpionfish, a spotted eagle ray, and several lemon rays and bandtail puffers. Then we moseyed over to the hammerhead shark sculptures that mark the west end of the snorkel trail and saw a crab eating a jellyfish. We finned slowly east along the snorkel trail, peeking into the artificial reef structures for all the juveniles, a few small Goliath groupers, one barred hamlet, and one enormous porcupinefish. We were underwater for 140 minutes, maximum depth 14 feet, for a very scenic relaxing dive. Visibility was as mediocre-poor as BHB usually is. Water temperature was 82. I wore a 3mm, but would have been comfortable in a shorty. There were a lot of non-stinging moon jellyfish, but I have seen man-o’-wars here, so I always wear a skin.
This park is used for scuba training, and on weekends it can get really crowded with swimmers and snorkelers, making the visibility impossible. Plan to go there mid-week, around a morning high tide. Force-E Scuba and Pura Vida Divers both lead night dives when the tides are right. The park closes at sunset unless you have a Force-E or PVD event permit.
