Comments After CoralPalooza on June 10, we stayed another day to dive Marathon, one of the Lower Keys. We used Captain Hook’s Marathon, on the Jolly Roger boat. We dived Sombrero Reef twice, different locations, and we dived Coffins Patch twice, a dusk and a night dive. All the dives were shallow, max depth was 24 feet. The visibility was mediocre for the day dives, but the light was good. We did fish surveys for REEF (Reef Environmental Education Foundation) at Sombrero and reported 37 species, including the big spectacular Blue, Midnight, Queen, and Rainbow parrotfishes. At Coffins Patch we did coral surveys for Florida’s SEAFAN BleachWatch citizen science program. We reported massive starlet corals (SSIG), mountainous star corals (OFAV), great star corals (MCAV), and boulder brain corals (CNAT) present and healthy, showing no signs of bleaching, paling, or disease. We saw a green sea turtle at Coffins Patch during the night dive.
These were citizen science dives for REEF and for SEAFAN, providing us opportunities to contribute valuable data to decision-makers trying to manage the health of the Florida Reef Tract.
