Comments I really enjoyed my time diving with Adang Sea Divers. The staff were all very friendly and courteous from the booking process up until the day we departed Koh Lipe. The shop has a board up with all the dives going the next day and you simply sign up for them the day beforehand so you get plenty of choice which sites you dive. Staff are always around and happy to discuss which sites offer what marine life. They have two boats and four dive times every day so plenty of options.
For the dives themselves it is a maximum of four divers to one guide. Early on in the trip I was grouped with a couple who were very experienced and we stayed as a group largely with the same DM - Jo - the whole week. I really appreciated this as the DM got a sense of what we were like early on and would take us to the parts of the sites where the less experienced divers were hanging out or to where there was more to see. Typically we'd start a dive site in the muck searching for macro and small animals and then transition to do the 'regular' site in the second half of the dive which I really enjoyed and gave us opportunity to both spot the tiny things and appreciate the beautiful soft corals and reef animals.
The vast majority of the sites are nice and shallow making for some very cruisy dives. There are deeper dive sites further out to sea (8 Mile Rock being one of the main ones) that they dive dependent on conditions and this is where you will see large pelagics, huge schools of fish, and whale sharks if lucky.
I loved the soft corals around Koh Lipe, the site Stonehenge has the biggest and best and it was an absolutely beautiful dive. Some of the dive sites closer to the island do get visited by big schools of snapper and barracuda. The currents at the sites around the island were usually pretty mild.
Disclaimer - I have never done specific macro dives before. However I was pleasantly surprised by the diversity of macro life we could see and most dives I was seeing not one but several completely new species. My dive buddies who did have plenty of macro experience seemed just as stoked as I was.
One morning on the last few days of the trip I was getting quite eager to see a coral catshark. I hadn't yet - sharks are my favourite and this was a new species for me at the time. I said as much to Jo and the next dive he pointed out different catsharks to me no less than 16 times which I was quite impressed by as we had plenty of other reef life on our hands keeping us busy (plenty of seahorses, puffers, morays, and boxfish on that particular dive.) If you are after anything specific wildlife wise just ask and the staff will do their best!
The dive team had a lot of staff and I did not interact with all of them but Jo, Job, Lauren, Ris, Kris, Sean, and the skippers (whose names I can't remember, sorry!) were all kind, courteous, and very professional. Everyone was smiling often and the shop was a great place to hang around. I didn't use rental gear but it looked well maintained.
For those used to the full valet diving experience in Southeast Asia you often are asked to carry your gear from the shop to the beach - it's a 100m walk if that, not a problem at all for me but if you need assistance with moving your gear around worth mentioning that to the staff.
If you do three or more (I think?) dives with these guys in a day you also get a complimentary meal from a reduced version of the menu at their restaurant. It's a vegan restaurant named Benny's and the food was delicious.
Sustainability gets points as well for offering reusable water bottles to divers as well as nice cool filtered water to fill it with! They seem to be very passionate about sustainability and participate in some coral restoration work as well as beach cleanups etc.
All in all, if I was in the area again I'd definitely do a couple more dives on Lipe with these guys and I have been recommending them since my trip to others travelling to the same area. Thanks again to Jo for such a wonderful dive experience and for getting me hooked on macro!
