Comments St Kitts (and Nevis) are beautiful Islands. Clean, well maintained, great roads, friendly people. Incredible history, (Nevis is very proud of being the home of Alexander Hamilton), both good and bad. The food was good both on and off the resort. Zante Port, where the cruise ships dock is very busy, with typical tourist traps, and a lot of them. How many t-shirt shops do you need?

Pro Divers is, as its' name suggests, a professional operation. Staffed by British ex-pats, they were warm and friendly to this older and portly retired gentleman of leisure. Mike from Liverpool
was my transport to and from the Marriott, we got along famously. Terry from Yorkshire was completing the instruction of Lucy from London of her open water certification. Austin from ?, the owner/operator and dive master is a consummate dive pro; warm, funny, yet keeping watch over his multinational flock like a benevolent shepherd. Which was a good thing for me, as the sea was choppy, and the visibility reduced. He was able to find, and point out the various critters. He was also able to help Lynn, from the veterinarian school, in her search for lobsters.

As stated, visibility was reduced because of the choppiness of the waves. The coral appeared to be bleached in spots, and there was a fair amount of algal growth. And while there were a number of smaller fish, there were few that were larger than a softball. Fishing is unrestricted in St. Kitts, and it shows. Lucy stated that any fishing had to be done much further out, because of this. Nonetheless, we did spot a turtle, a rather large stingray, a barracuda, a number of lion fish and a sea horse (thanks Austin!). And a large number of lobsters. We maintained between 40 - 50 feet, and while the visibility was decreased, we were still able to see the hundreds of plastic water bottles, wet wipes (ew!) plastic cups, and automotive tires, as well as the assorted detritus from an island nation that does not appear to care about its' reefs. Add to that, we were downstream of the cruise ships, and you have the makings of a Caribbean reef tragedy.

Which brings me to my final point: St. Kitts and Nevis had a thriving sugar cane industry, until the mid 1960's, when it finally collapsed. Both islands are lush, with rich volcanic soil, plenty of water, and gently sloping land ripe for agriculture. Why then are they importers of a significant amount of food, much from Dominica and other EC islands? Thousands and thousands of acres lay fallow, and the population spends more than they should for food imported from elsewhere, Why have the reefs been so abused? The answer is that the Kittians have put all their eggs in the tourism basket. At one point, there were 4 cruise ships docked at Zante Port, including the largest in the world. As a consequence, it seems like all Kittians have their hands out. Tipping is mandatory (that 12.5% surcharge on every meal bill). No shuttles anywhere. Even the Marriott has no shuttle to the airport, or anywhere else. Taxis are a major revenue stream for many Kittians, and tips are always expected. Caveat emptor!

In summary: the island is beautiful and well maintained. The reefs are marginal, and a dumping ground. And the people are friendly, but also have their hand out.
