Comments This was an unusual trip because there were only three guests on the trip, including me. It meant we had really personal dive experiences, and I thoroughly enjoyed the company of DMs LT and Brett (I would otherwise have dived solo, something Explorer will allow if you have SDI solo certification and carry a rescue bottle). The food from Chef Julian was excellent, and his baked goods are a joy to consume.
The cabins remain smallish and overly air conditioned, but since this was my 4th trip on this boat, I remembered to bring magnetic vent covers, which made my cabin comfortable. I reserved cabin number one, on the main deck, which I liked more than any of the other cabins I'd used. It has two windows and a queen bed, and with its natural light, was pleasant for reading.
The only real disappointment was environmental. SCTLD, or coral wasting disease, is rampant, and particularly evident in Saba. I'd been there on this boat 18 months prior, and the amount of white, dead coral was a shock, around 2/3 to 3/4 dead. At some of the sites around Saint Kitts, where there were wrecks that were home to a lot of creatures, the dead coral seemed less significant. But around Saba, it is shockingly evident.
I applaud the staff of the Caribbean Explorer, and particularly enjoyed interacting with Captain Sarah, DMs, and purser Jonathan. I am sure they all wish we could turn back the clock and revive the stony corals.
The land tours in Saint Kitts and Saba were enjoyable, particularly Fort Brimstone in Saint Kitts, a magnificent structure rich with history.
