Comments Admittedly I recently dived Palau from the Black Pearl, so you might say I have a bias. But my Red Sea experience during August, 2023, aboard the M/Y SS Glorious Miss Nouran diving the Southern Red Sea was less, much less than hoped for.

The Glorious is a decent ship, and we were blessed to be only half-full, meaning all us singles had our own cabins. While I’m not an avid photographer the lack of a dedicated camera/photo area was a negative. We we’re told just to commandeer one of the tables in the dinner area (which we did) and make do, but what happens when the ships full? Recharging was accomplished using one the multitude of outlets that circled the dinning room/lounge, which gave the room the ambiance of a “work in progress.” When queried for compressed air to clean cameras, the response was “who would ever do that that; you’ll just damage your kit!” Did I mention I had a half inch of water on the bath floor the entire week, owning to poor drainage; but they did provide me a squeegee to direct water to the drain between showers.

The food and service were superb, as was the crew overall. A full breakfast was served after the first dive, with omelets/eggs made to order. Lunch and dinner were a variety of meats and fish, with a cornucopia of salads and native dishes, all served buffet style. Egyptian wine and beer were available at a nominal cost for those not night diving, or just calling an early end to the day.

Now as for the diving (recall my bias). We were provided a detailed briefing on the potential danger posed by Oceanic White Tips. Unfortunately, we never saw one, nor did we see a shark all week…you read right, not one shark all week. No pelagics whatsoever; no rays, etc. In fact, the biggest fish of the week were the Bump head parrot fish. On the last day, on the last dive we encountered huge loggerhead turtles, much as you would off Jupiter, Florida during breeding season.

The reefs and walls are pristine, adored with hard and soft corals populated by variety of small, colorful tropical reef, but no large schools of fish. Did I mention no sharks…not even a nurse shark!

I understand the Red Sea is large and diverse, so I was told if I wanted to see pelagics and sharks I needed to dive the Northern Red Sea…I was just in the wrong place to see what I’d come for; so be it.
Meanwhile shark attacks routinely occur off Hurghada beaches and South.

But the biggest downer of the week was rising at 0600 for a cup of fresh coffee to watch the sun come up over the desert and look out upon 8-10 other liveaboards all moored to the same reef/atoll. Each ship with upwards of 25 divers. We’d see same ships day after day. Underwater we could have used traffic cop to direct the groups in the right direction so they didn’t get mixed up. Maybe that’s why all the pelagics were not to be seen.

So, after 26 hours in airplanes, not counting time in airports I was admittedly disappointed. I enjoyed the country and the people, and the camel steak was to die for, but as for the diving, I think not.
I’d return to Cocos, the Socorro’s, Palau or Chuk tomorrow, but as for the Red Sea I think not.
