Comments Oasis Resort and Seaquest Diving
Bohol, Philippines
In the past 12 years I had made four previous trips to the Oasis Resort in Bohol and was well pleased with its good diving and value for the dollar. However, I had not made a trip there in about five years so I thought I would add five days there after my week at the Magic Oceans Resort on another side of Bohol.
The resort itself and the restaurant there remained the same as I remembered from past visits. Rooms were nice but fairly basic, and the restaurant was very good. The diving was pretty much the same too…very good, especially at Balicasag Island. However the “White Beach” area of Panglao, Bohol has become much more developed in recent years and the crowding reminded me a bit of Boracay just before the Philippine government shut all of Boracay down for a year to get it cleaned up. I admit that the new development added more choices for off-resort dining and cheap gift shopping, but lots of it did not seem like high quality new development. On a positive note, not many of the throngs of tourists were smoking and I wondered if that was restricted (if so…good!). Most of the tourists were well behaved young Chinese and Koreans and some resorts cater to these markets.
The diving at this part of Bohol, especially Balicasag Island had a little better visibility this week than Magic Oceans had the previous week. Typically 60-90 feet. The three tank dive days to Balicasag were great, with a huge schools of jacks at Black Forest, plus numerous turtles. Cathedral had a huge school of bait fish and four different colors of frogfish. Most divers took lunch with us. My only complaint with the dive operation was with a dive guide I had for one of my days. He swam too fast and often left us three photographers 40 feet behind. A couple times I decided to not photo and swim behind him. He did not look behind him for almost three minutes each time. My other days, Reece was my dive guide and she was great. However, I observed a third dive guide leading a Chinese group on what looked like a swim practice rather than a slow-paced and safe dive.
The Seaquest Dive Center is part of the company that also operates the Oasis Resort and another resort at Moaboal. They offer good service at a very reasonable price. It was about $660 for five nights of diving, breakfasts, and a ten dive package. Overall…..very good diving for a very reasonable price……if you don’t mind the throngs of tourists!
