Comments Salaya is a beautiful resort. The rooms are spacious, well-appointed and the staff are wonderful. A husband and wife run the operations: he oversees the diving and she oversees the resort.
Prior to each dive we met at the dive shop where we suited up and saw our gear being carried to the boat. We boarded the boat by wading through water, sometimes chest-high, and ascending a steep ramp. There was always someone available to help if needed. Many of the dives were muck dives and we saw some interesting little creatures including nudibranchs, scorpionfish (including devil), and flamboyant cuttlefish. Some of the dives were truly spectacular with lots of colorful fish, large anemone beds, schools of barracuda.
Most of the boat trips were 5-10 minutes and on two occasions we took a longer (about 60 min) ride to Apo Island, which is a beautiful site for wall diving. It was striking that there were no big fish, no sharks, no octopus to be found the entire trip and we wondered if this was due to a combination of factors including weather (there had been a recent typhoon) and lack of regulation/need, along for subsistence fishing during the pandemic.
Occasional twilight/night dive on the house reef was enjoyable.
A small group (12) of us had the resort to ourselves which made for quiet and uncrowded conditions. The resort really spoils the guests and is setting up to become a wellness center with yoga, massages, etc so it will be attracting a variety of guests beyond divers in the future.
