Comments First, let me make clear the dive operator Liquid and my accommodations at Amontillado Dive Resort were A-1. My concern is with the area of Dumaguete. I am certain many divers are going to loudly disagree with my assessment of this area, but this is my opinion. This is not my first time diving in the PI, but the first time in this area. The PI is at the apex of the golden triangle of diversity in the IndoPacific. I was looking forward to some great photo opportunities. I was totally disappointed!!!! The reefs are, in my opinion, sufffering from the pressure of too many divers. The corals were almost nonexistant, colorless and broken. Fish??? I counted exactly two sweetlips on eight dives. I suggest, due to commercial and subsistant fishing; the area is fished out. Our dive guides fished for their lunch...they were happy to be dinning on a sergeant (sp.?). Areas I visited: Apo, Siquijor, Dauin and Sumilon. Whale sharks at Oslob...it is for sure you can get up close and personal with the sharks, perhaps too close. The sharks are fed so it does present an artificial setting. We were advised to go during the week as the weekends are circus like.
Despite my disappointment in Dumaguete, I will return to the Philippines, but in a different area.
