Comments Kasai Village is a lovely resort on the southwest coast of Cebu. Having travelled many hours from Malapascua, we were all happy to be greeted by the staff and processed efficiently. The restaurant is on the 2nd floor of an adjacent building and offered a fine view along with excellent food with many courses offered. All meals were buffet style. The most recent Typhoon destroyed the spa building, so massages were given in the rooms. Since an hour cost less than $15, I took advantage often. If the spa isn’t back up and running, be sure to ask for a massage table to be brought to your room.

That typhoon also affected the dive operation, as the end of the jetty where boats tied up was broken off and sits several meters from where it was once attached to the long jetty. Only one boat could tie up at one time, so our second boat loaded in the shallows by the beach. The walk from the resort to the end of the jetty was over 250 steps and always hot plus a bit rough, so be sure to wear booties or footwear going and coming. Dive gear was always ready on the boats, as the staff loaded it onto trolleys in the morning and returned it after the day’s diving was completed. Photographers could carry cameras or have the staff transport them. A well-equipped camera room adjoined the dive storage and prep area. A dedicated camera rinse tank was just outside that room.

The diving was excellent as expected. Like the previous week at Malapascua, we saw many varieties of fish and critters that make this area of the world an attaction. There were plenty of ghost pipefish, anemonefish, butterflyfish, frogfish, nudibranchs, shrimp and crabs. Our dive guides, Dong and Jimboy, did an excellent job of pointing out many of these. I did 17 dives in 6 days, including one night dive on the house reef. One day we took a several-hour bus trip to Oslob, on the southeast coast, to dive with whale sharks. Our dive gear came by separate truck and was waiting for us when we arrived. This opportunity to do SCUBA with whale sharks gave us a totally different view as opposed to snorkeling with them. Oslob limits the number of divers allowed each day, and there is a fleet of pangas that take snorkelers out to see the sharks as several small boats feed them – which is why the sharks are there regularly. Another unique dive experience was a protected site where a huge school of sardines is always found. It’s a neat experience to be surrounded by so many small fish that one can’t see out of the school in any direction. And to watch them all move in coordinated fashion is a visual delight.
