Comments This report is in response tp Undercurrent's request for info about canceled dives. I did not report on this 2011 incident because I am not usually inclined to report a controversial incident while my feelings are quite strong. But I am now ready to share the story.
My wife and I were on the way back from Tubbataha Reef on board the Atlantis's live aboard. Seas were very rough and the boat was proceeding at a steady pace in very rough seas. Suddenly, the boat rolled so much that I was thrown from the bench on one side of the lounge into the railings surrounding the stairway to the lower deck. Unfortunately, I had had experience with broken ribs before in a cycling accident, so I was quite sure I had broken ribs again. I retired to my cabin, where the captain visited me awhile later. When he asked me how I was, I stated that I was pretty sure I had broken some ribs. He replied, and I quote, "So you're ok then?" Since he had two other crew members with him, I politely replied, "I wouldn't go that far." Had he been alone with me, I would have replied far differently.
Upon reaching the dock and flying back to Manila, we flew on to Dumaguete, Atlantis's land based dive resort. On the way to the resort from the airport, we stopped at a local clinic where x-rays revealed two broken ribs. We also stopped at a pharmacy where I got painkillers. (To my surprise, the cost of the x-rays and meds were part of our bill at the end of the stay at Dumaguete. I suppose I should have installed a seat belt on the lounge bench.)
When I asked for financial consideration for my inability to dive at all during the week, I was told that the manager, who was absent at the time, would deal with my request. Despite direct and phone conversations and emails, I was told that their policy was not to adjust for such circumstances. (Had other divers on the live aboard suffered similarly?) His position was that policy could not be changed. Perhaps it came from some divine source....
The only accommodation he offered was a discount if I were to book another trip with Atlantis. Somehow, I haven't yet rebooked.
Do remember that I did not report this incident immediately out of anger or spite. But when Undercurrents requested reports of paid for dives being not available, I was ready to reply. I really haven't forgotten....
