Comments ATLANTIS DUMAGUETE REVIEW

Spent 6 nights at the Atlantis after a week on the Atlantis live-aboard, Azores, at the Tubbataha Atoll.

The Atlantis staff met us upon arrival at the Dumaguete airport and promptly and efficiently gathered us and our bags for transfer to the resort. It is about a 4o minute ride from the airport to the resort.

At the resort, we received a brief but thorough orientation then off to unpack and set up dive and camera gear. The resort has an excellent camera room with several stations, compressed air and both 220 and 110 power. Divers are assigned a gear storage area that are more than adequate.

The accommodations are quite nice with satellite TV, good lighting and plenty of storage room. The food is plentiful and tasty. Breakfast is made-to-order including pancakes, waffles and French toast. Lunch and dinner include several options usually of seafood, poultry, pork, beef and veggie. The desserts, including a variety of sorbets, were excellent. All alcohol is extra; the resort offers a limited selection of wines but a nice variety of single malt Scotch.

An aspect that the restaurant can definitely improve on is the service. Several times, our meals for a party of 7 were served at several different times; on occasion there was 45 minutes between the first guest being served and last guest receiving her meal.

The first 3 dive days we were on a nice, large outrigger boat that accommodated 11 divers. This included a 3-tank trip to Apo Island. The last 2 days there at 8 to 9 of us on a dive boat that was meant to handle perhaps 6 divers and crew. It was a bit crowded with people, dive gear and cameras.

Most of the AM dives were 2-tank trips with about 10 minute rides to the dive sites. The 2 afternoon dives were usually 1 tankers fairly close to the resort.

The attraction at Dumaguete is the black sand diving full of small aquatic critters. The macro photo opportunities included several different species of crab, shrimp & squat lobsters, sea horses, several varieties of anemonefish, many different types of eels, frog fish, jawfish with eggs in mouth, many nudibranch species including some mating, juvenile reef fish, different species of pipefish, cuttlefish including the flamboyant variety, dragonets and octopus.

The critter-finder ability of the dive guides varied among the dive staff. Our guys were adequate but not great.

I very much enjoyed my time at Atlantis Dumaguete and would definitely consider a return visit.

UW Photo Comments The resort has an excellent camera room that is first class; facilities on the dive boats are adequate. Camera rinse on shore tended to always be full of large camera rigs. No the best place to leave one's camera.
