Comments The Philippines had been on our watch list for a while so it was an easy call when our favorite trip leader posted that he was organizing a trip there for 2026. Spoiler alert: Amun Ini resort, staff and the diving were first rate.

Getting there was a hike from the US with some pitfalls for the unwary. Most international airlines in Manila operate out of terminal 3. This includes the ones from North America, Europe, Japan, the Philippines and some Asian ones. Terminal 2 handles all domestic traffic so you typically fly into terminal 3, collect your luggage and transfer to terminal 2 for the puddle jumper flight to whichever island is your goal. The two terminals are separated by a 20-minute taxi ride through Manila (in good traffic) although there is a free shuttle service connecting them, too.

There are a number of ways to get to Manila but once there, most people in our group over-nighted at one of several hotels in the area (Marriott, Hilton, Holiday Inn) to be sure of making the one hour flight to Bohol on which lay our resort. We built a 2-1/2 hr layover in Manila into our travel schedule that, in retrospect, was too short for comfort. Our Air Canada flight landed late in Manila. Helpful agents recommended that we a fast taxi service if we wanted to catch our next flight instead of the free shuttle service. Good move since, as it was, we only made the check in for our Bohol flight by 15 minutes. The free shuttle service may leave every 15 minutes, but travel times through downtown Manila are, shall we say, variable! The van from Amun Ini met us at the Tagbilaran airport for a two hour drive to the resort.

The resort staff was very accommodating to our flight schedules when we left. There were three shuttle departure times to Tagbilaran on our last day depending on when the flight to Manila was scheduled. Our afternoon shuttle put us in Manila in the early evening and left us with a 13 hr layover. Note to self: there is NOT any way in Manila (or probably anywhere come to think of it) to check in more than 3 hr before your flight. Forget any thoughts of hanging out in one of the executive lounges enticingly located just after security. Despite not having hotel reservations, Poddotel came to our rescue. We crossed our f ...
