Comments PHILIPPINES AGGRESSOR II REVIEW

After diving Moalboal and Bohol, I returned to Cebu City and Mactan to board the Philippines Aggressor II (PAII) for a 10m night trip. I traveled back to Cebu City from Tagbilaran, Bohol by ferry, which is much faster and less expensive than flying back through Manila.

After the usual boat and dive briefings, the 5 divers on this trip settled in for the run up to Malapasqua where we went looking for thresher sharks. These sharks have moved to a shallower location, Kimud Shoal that allows for closer and clearer encounters with the sharks. The shoal is also visited by many dives from the Malapasqua resorts and from liveaboards. We then dived nearby Gato Island where encountered some strong currents.

From Malapasqua, we traveled to the southeast side of Bohol to dive the reefs of Anda. We dived here for 2 days enjoying the variety of dives sites here. Next, we dived Pamilacan and Panglao for 1 day then traveled south to dive Apo Island and the Dauin area at the south end of Negros Island with 5 dives.

On the 7th dive day, we ventured up to the southeast side of Cebu to dive Obslob and Sumilon Island. At Obslob, we did one dive with several whale sharks and a horde of snorkelers.

Next dive location was Cabilao Island for 4 dives. Then onto Olango Island near Mactan for our last 2 dives. This itinerary offered a nice variety of dive locations with different dive sites and marine life.

All diving is done from skiffs. The crew loads and unloads all the dive gear and also rinses and hangs wetsuits. The diving starts early with the 1st dive at 6:30 am. The 4th dive is a night dive.

The PAII has a camera table that was sufficient for our small # of guests but would be inadequate for a trip with 20+ divers. There are battery charging stations nearby, which might become a bit congested with a full guest load.

We had 2 dive guides for our 5 divers. Both guides were very familiar with the dive sites. Both guides tended to cruise the sites a bit too quickly for a diver like myself who goes slowly and takes photos. One of the guides was a pretty skilled critter-finder.

The marine life encountered included the thresher sharks, many green sea turtles, banded sea snakes and the usual smaller creatures. Due to the time of year, there was not an abundance of nudibranchs. One highlight to this trip was to watch a large green turtle make a meal out of a purple crown jellyfish.

The PAII is a newer vessel that is quite spacious and well equipped. I had a an upstairs cabin that had a large queen bed, plenty of storage, a large bathroom and table for laptop. It had a small lanai that was useful for drying dive clothes.

The boat has a large salon and dining area that can handle a full guest load of 26 divers. The food on board was generally nicely prepared and tasty. Breakfast and lunch are buffet with a plated dinner. A nice variety of Filipino and western foods were offered. Beer and wine are served at no additional charge.

The boat has 2 WIFI networks but neither was very reliable. Since we were usually near a populated island, I was able to use data to stay connected.

In summary, this was a very enjoyable trip on a nice, new spacious boat with a very friendly, helpful crew experiencing a variety of dive locations and marine life.
