Comments There are nine islands in the Azores. I stayed and dove on the largest, São Miguel, so I can’t comment on the others. The islands lie about 1,000 miles west of Portugal in the North Atlantic. Although subtropical, the water is on the cooler side.
On São Miguel, nearly all dive shops use rigid inflatable boats (RIBs). I asked a couple of dive operators about this, and they said RIBs are faster and can reach sites that larger boats cannot. However, there are a few drawbacks worth noting. The main one is space—there’s very little. Gearing up in a crowded RIB can be awkward, especially when conditions are rough.
The lack of space also means there’s usually only room for one tank per diver. For two-tank dives, you return to the marina after the first dive for your surface interval, then head out again for the second. This limits how far you can travel for your first dive.
