Started diving in 1974 so that gives me 52 years of great adventures – time to quit? Nooo, as there is the saying “don´t stop diving when you get old, you get old …” Well, I will continue to enjoy that marvelous sport. At around 50 I stopped diving in the cold lakes at home, too much fuss and gear, way too cold even with 7 mil semi dry, hood gloves etcetera. Nowadays I´m not that keen anymore of wild and bumpy rides in Zodiac, I feel all bones in my vertebrae are grinding together, I don´t need washing machine like conditions or strong currents. I love warm water, relaxed diving, going deep once in a while, am still in rather good shape with great air consumption where youngsters envy me. Problems are sometimes climbing steep ladders with full gear, reflux on negative entry kicking down fast. And today I hate long hauls to some tropical destination e g going to the Philippines via Taiwan with a travel time of 30 h or even more. Most times now I try to stay below 10 h which brings me into Africa or the Caribbean. This time I picked Oman, maybe not too good an idea with trouble all around. But offering warm water, good reefs and coral, relaxed swim in about 6 h from my place. Been there 3 times already, live aboard out of Mirbat, some resorts. Oman offers lovely reefs , good fish life, some wrecks, often however with lots of plankton in the water it´s pea soup like.
Flight with Oman Air was only half full, so I could stretch out on 3 seats and try to get some sleep. Arrival in Muscat at 5:30 a m, transfer of 40 minutes got me to the Hotel at 6:30.
