Comments Pohnpei, "The Garden Island", is a wet high volcanic island with surrounding dryer atolls. Kolonia gets 190 inches of rain yearly with about 1/2 inch nearly every day. The mountains get over 400 inches. Runoff limits the visibility to about 30 feet inside the surrounding reef. Visibility at Ant Atoll is much better.
Mangrove Bay Hotel has eight nice rooms on the water at the edge of town. Pohnpei Surf Club and its boats are located at the hotel. Several good restaurants are nearby. Kolonia is a busy port town.
Pohnpei Surf Club is a well run operation offering surfing, diving, sightseeing and fishing trips. Alois, the owner, pays close attention to the weather and incoming and outgoing tides when planning dive trips to the reef passes, walls or Ant Atoll. We enjoyed the diving. We should have planned for more days. We dove three days out of a possible four and sat out the stormy fourth dive day. Island hopping cuts into possible dive days because of limited flight availability and timing. We visited Kosrae and Pohnpei on this trip.
Pohnpei has an interesting history. Be sure to visit Nan Madol if the opportunity presents itself, like on the day before you fly or if it is not raining too hard.
