Comments Kosrae is the Eastern-most island of Micronesia. It is one volcanic island not an atoll. So the dive locations and sites are not all that varied. There is no WWII wreckage.

Nautilus Resort is a very comfortable resort owned and operated by Doug and Sally Beitz. They are very welcoming and accommodating. My room was spacious and clean with wireless internet (albeit very slow). The food was excellent -- particularly enjoyed the banana pancakes, sashimi and the mangrove crab. The staff was very helpful and friendly.

The diving was pretty good but not spectacular. The reefs are very healthy but are all hard coral in basic earth tones so not so colorful. Lots of smaller reef fish, anemones, and shrimp. Encountered a couple of large schools of jacks and barracudas. Nice giant clams. Not many sharks and had only one dive with eagle rays. Kosrae boasts of its eagle rays. Not turtles and not many eels. Was told that the locals are fishing the reef too much and some sort of reef protection is necessary.

Was the only diver on a 30 foot dive boat. Doug was the dive guide with Salik as the boat driver. Due to strong NE winds, the dive locations were a bit limited. Did 2 tanks off the boat in the AM returning to the resort for lunch. Did a one-tank PM dive on several days. Doug and Salik were great company on the boat. Boat had fresh water and fresh fruit.

In summary, I enjoyed my visit to Kosrae. However, the diving does not warrant the hassle getting there. If you are taking the island hopper flight from HNL thru Majuro then onto Micronesia, then you will stop on Kosrae. A 5 day visit would be in order.

UW Photo Comments I was the only diver during my week + stay at the Nautilus Resort. Plenty of room on the dive boat. Dive boat had a cooler filled with water for my camera/strobes. No camera table. Due to the poor water system infrastructure on Kosrae, clean fresh water was not always available.

Lots of small reef fish and critters for photos; was disappointed in the lack of larger animals.
