Comments WE've been to Palau 5 times before, so we pretty much knew what to expect with regard to diving, temp, conditions, etc. The Palau Pacific is a wonderful resort with a nice beach and a nice reef for snorkeling. They added a spa last year and the massage therapists are great. It is, however, quite expensive.
If you want to go to Palau more economically, the folks at Fish n Fins can arrange a trip for you with quite a few options for accommodations that won't break the bank. We heard reports from other divers that Rose Garden Resort was comfortable with good food.
Palau is a long flight from the US, but the diving is very much worth it. We've dived with Fish n Fins 3 times now and with another dive operator twice and have found Fish n Fins to be much more accommodating and personal. They really worked hard to be sure we got to the dive sites we were interested in and they tried to group divers of similar abilities. The boat drivers are great and the rides to the dive sites are a pure scenic pleasure. The dive masters are well trained, professional, appropriately careful, knowledgeable and fun.
This trip was special for us because it was Shark Week, which is a Fish n Fins annual event. They had speakers at the patio/restaurant outside the dive shop each night. The gatherings provided an opportunity to mingle with other divers who love sharks and to learn more about shark behaviors and the dangers to worldwide shark populations. Underwater cameraman and videographer, Richard Brooks, made a wonderful video which Fish n Fins gave to all the participants. We were asked to record the numbers and types of sharks we observed on each dive, and there were lots of them.
The owners of Fish n Fins, Tova and Navot Bornovski, are very involved in the conservation movement in Palau and are a wealth of information. The boats are fast and comfortable. The lunches, which are most often taken on the most beautiful, uninhabited islands you could possible imagine, are great. The office staff is very efficient and helpful. And you end up feeling like family before the trip is over! Fish n Fins also has 2 liveaboards so for those of you who want to dive, dive, dive, that is an option too. Each trip with Fish n Fins is too short. We can't wait to go back!
