Comments We couldn’t resist the invitation from friends to dive Malta as we’ve never dove in the Mediterranean. We dove three times a day for five days at the following sites: Zurrig Helmet on the south shore of Malta near the Blue Grotto; the Valletta harbor at Tigne Point, X127 Water Lighter wreck, HMS Maori wreck, and Fort St Elmo; the Tug 2 wreck just north of Sliema; the Rozi and P29 wrecks as well as Ahrax Point off the north shore of Malta; the P31 wreck and Santa Marija Caves on Comino (a separate uninhabited island); and Fessej Rock and Middle Finger on Gozo (yet another island). For the most part, these represent the most well known sites. Abnormal high winds/wind direction and waves kept us mostly within the Valletta Harbor for the first couple of days, suggesting we would have gone to different shore sites otherwise.

Malta does have some unique characteristics compared to where we normally dive in the tropics. Indeed, it is probably most similar to southern California without the kelp/sea life. First, the diving is more about underwater topography and wrecks than sea life. Most dives feature large rocky walls, caverns, and large boulders – often covered with beautiful thick fields of green Neptune seagrass, yellow seagrass of some kind, and/or Peacock Tail algae that look like white flower pedals rather than coral. While the wrecks predictably attract a fair amount of schooling fish, they are more the exception away from the wrecks. Most of the fish are quite small: think gobies, damselfish, bream, blennies, wrasse, and chromis. There were a few unique species you don’t often see elsewhere such as triggerfish, octopus, flying gurnards, t ... Subscribe to get the full story. Dive Experience 251-500 dives
Where else diving Throughout most of Caribbean, Florida (Key Largo, Palm Beach, Jupiter, USS Oriskany), NC wrecks, St Lawrence River wrecks, Monterey and Catalina CA, Hawaii, Great Barrier Reef/Coral Sea Australia, French Polynesia, Komodos in Indonesia, Galapagos, Hawaii, and Silfra in Iceland.
Closest Airport Valletta Getting There Most of the best options seemed to be via Frankfurt on Lufthansa/United. The connections were very tight (unfortunately, not many options) and the customs/immigration line at Frankfurt was very long both directions - we barely made our connection going to Malta and barely missed it coming home. Highly recommend building in at least a two hour layover in Frankfurt if you can. There is apparently a new/recent non-stop flight from New York to Malta that might merit consideration from US.

Enforced diving restrictions While there were not specific hardcore limits - we followed a guide who was generally planning dives to end with about 1000 psi - which meant most dives lasted 50-60 minutes for us. For most part, the dive lengths were about right for the site. Dive operator was not on a strict schedule.
