We spent a week on Sachika in August 2024 and recommend it to anyone who is serious about their diving. All of the key operational stuff was great: boat layout and upkeep, comfortable cabins, ample and tasty meals, fully stocked bar for happy hours, smooth high-touch dive operation, excellent crew. Maldives liveaboards in the middle to upper price range (Sachika is squarely mid-priced) may often meet many of those standards, but what sets Sachika apart is its focus on diving.

Our family of four adults ranged from some with 800+ dives to one with only 30, but all of us were in the Maldives to dive as much as we could. Sachika offered an extra dive beyond the usual three on 4 of the 5 full diving days, and scheduled three dives on the 6th day while many Maldives liveaboards only offer two. In the end we made 22 dives on our weeklong trip. We never got any sense of inconvenience with the additional diving, although the relatively long dhoni rides to the dive sites and spread-out schedule meant three of the extra dives were at night (though one of them, at Maaya Thila, was one of the most exciting dives of them all).

We were on the "Best of the Central Atolls" itinerary which includes many Maldives staples such as a manta cleaning station, night diving with nurse sharks, and stingray & eel craziness near the airport. Most dives involved light to moderate currents, which in some places led to beautiful soft corals, and when diving a "thilla" (underwater pinnacle) or pass yielded quite a few pelagics. The reefs themselves ranged from depressingly bleached to active and vibrant, though none had the density of small stuff to be found in, say, the coral triangle.

If we dive again in the Maldives we'll certainly return to Sachika, though for variety we might select a different itinerary. Sachika's newer and larger sister ship soon to launch, Princess Maani, may also be worth checking out -- it will be run by the same friendly and competent crew as Sachika.

As with our many dive trips over the last decade or two, we booked through Dive and Cruise (www.diveandcruise.com). They're incredibly knowledgeable and communicative with no premium charged -- in fact sometimes they can offer a discount. Our favorite Dive and Cruise agent Ksenia retired during the pandemic, but Shueri easily fills her shoes.
