Comments The EcoPro Seascape scuba liveaboard was built in 2023 and launched in the Maldives the following year. It accommodates up to 28 guests in 14 generously sized cabins. Our dive package included three dives per day with nitrox-filled tanks and weights. Other dive gear was available to rent, with prior arrangement, for anyone who needed it.

Our 10-day trip encompassed a diverse itinerary that included North Male, South Male, Vaavu, South Ari, and North Ari. Each location highlighted different species.

Safety First
We had a muster drill, during which we were told to gather on the main deck if we heard the emergency alarm. We were also told to not charge batteries in our cabins when we were sleeping or not present. Instead, we were directed to multiple charging stations on a large platform under the windows on both sides of the main deck. This insured that someone would always be present to observe and quickly respond to a battery fire if one should occur. The crew also did night watch rotations, we were told.

Environmental Stewardship
Many guests expressed appreciation that EcoPro Seascape crew regarded environmental stewardship as a personal mission. Divemaster Athi spoke with visible pride about how the parent company, EcoPro Divers, was part of a global collaboration called “Parley for the Oceans” whose mission is to raise awareness about the fragile state of the ocean. One of its initiatives is to actively discourage plastic use, remove plastic from the environment whenever possible and push for innovation in materials science to create sustainable alternatives.
“So we ask you to please not put any plastic items you may have brought with you in our trash cans,” Athi said. “Take them home with you for recycling.”

Another initiative Athi spoke about is EcoPro Divers partnership with the Manta Trust, a UK-registered charity comprised of researchers, scientists, conservationists, educators and media experts working together to coordinate global manta and devil rays research and conservation efforts. Each year EcoPro Divers holds a raffle for a spot on an educational dive trip with a marine biologist on board.

Athi also told us to not touch any of the marine life we encountered. “It’s very tempting to reach up your hand to stroke the underside of a manta ray when they are swimming so close above you. But we ask you to not do that please.”

Dive Experience 101-250 dives
Where else diving Started diving in early 1970s in Pennsylvania quarries and off New Jersey. Over the years I've been diving in Florida Keys, Grand Cayman, Bermuda, Cozumel, Bonaire, La Paz, Maui, Cabo, Puerto Morelos, Cenote Choc Mool, Costa Rica and Belize.
Closest Airport Male International Getting There Flew from JFK on Etihad Airways. LONG layover in Abu Dhabi. The drive to JFK from Philly was horrible due to traffic. I did it to save myself another layover from Philly to Chicago that would then take me to JFK. In hindsight, I would have been better off leaving from Philly or even Baltimore. I'll never drive to New York City again.

Enforced diving restrictions Divers were divided into groups of about 6-7 and assigned to a divemaster who guided that group. Divemasters enforced max depth plans, checked our air supply, advised buddy teams to swim together and shepherded divers who occasionally got lost--like me.
