Comments This is the second time we went diving with Carpe Vita through Explorer Ventures. Five years ago, we visited in August and were impressed with the color and vitality of the reefs not to mention the manta rays and whale sharks. We wanted to dive somewhere warm during the winter break so decided to return to Maldives.
Carpe Vita runs a well oiled operation, with a spacious dhoni that didn’t feel tight even with the full boat. The dhoni has ladder for climbing back in, large tank for cameras, and two shower heads outside and one toilet with shower inside. The crew makes diving very easy.
The visibility was much worse in January than August, and the current much stronger which overall made the diving a little tougher. Our itinerary this time was different to our previous one. Last time we dived Male to Male route but this time we took a domestic flight to dive Baa atoll.
The diving for the first two days was very mediocre particularly in coral life. Many dive sites were in channels with strong current. The best sites seem to be the ones from our Male to Male route so if I were to return I wouldn’t bother taking the flight north for this route.
The pelagic life was denser this trip than last, but overall we liked our summer trip better with the better visibility.
The dive masters really could use some more training though. We weren’t given much information about the fish and critter life – for example not to shine torch on mantis shrimp. One diver with poor buoyancy who kicked around coral often unintentionally was never given advice how to improve her buoyancy (or the fact that she is kicking the corals). On the night dive we weren’t told the basic safety measures such as keeping one’s light on at all time, basic signals and what not to do. I don’t fault the dive masters for this – it’s clearly a management issue. Carpe Diem group has expanded now running three boats and a new resort, and need to wonder whether this has resulted in lack of management focus or whether the ever expanding tourism industry is churning the dive masters.
Overall the operator is more than fine for experienced divers, but could do better with the more inexperienced divers.
