Comments Utila Lodge's comfortable rooms are built over the water and have screened porches. I was there in July, and it was over 90 degrees and very humid every day, but the air conditioning kept my room pleasantly cool.

The food was good, but not great--the grilled chicken was a favorite--and all of the lodge staff went out of their way to ensure guests were happy. Guest-facing staff at the lodge all speak good English, but if you want to communicate with the kitchen staff, which can be necessary if you want a dish other than the standard one for that meal, knowing a little Spanish is helpful.

The diving (through Bay Islands College of Diving) was best on the north side of the island, which meant ~45 minute boat rides. Staff will handle rinsing and putting away your gear after dives and ensuring it gets on the boat in the morning.

The reef near the lodge on the south side of the island has some spots with extensive bleaching, and visibility can be compromised. However, the two night dives I did, both relatively close to the lodge, were on sites with healthy reef and lots of marine life (including string of pearls one night, which was magical). The boat was uncrowded and well-shaded, though there was no head.

The divemasters/instructors were excellent (shout out to Hannah and Marcos)—they were safety-conscious, provided thorough briefings, and worked hard to find and point out critters. We saw pods of dolphins several times, and the captain stopped to allow us to snorkel with them. The diving was easy, with no current and good visibility; the water was around 85 degrees and many divers dove in only bathing suits and maybe a rash guard. On a few days, there was a good amount of chop.

For me, the biggest negative was the difficulty in getting to Utila. Coming from the northeast, it was not possible for me to fly to Roatan with enough time to clear immigration/customs and get to the ferry terminal in time for the ferry, which goes to Utila once a day. So I had to stay over in Roatan, which, since I wasn’t diving, was kind of a drag. The ferry itself is comfortable, but there were very rough seas on the trip back from Utila to Roatan—you know it’s going to be bad when the crew goes down the aisles passing out bags before the ferry leaves the terminal--and I had taken off my last scopolamine patch the day before. If I go back to Utila, I will seriously consider taking the short flight from Roatan.
